This summer's weather has certainly given us plenty to think about.
Across the UK we've experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat, and conversations about climate change have moved from being something that feels distant to something that's happening right outside our front doors. Whether it's the impact on our homes, our health or our communities, climate change is becoming part of everyday life.
It's also becoming an increasingly important consideration when it comes to our finances.
A recently published report, Pensions in a Warming World, explores how climate-related risks are likely to play an ever-growing role in pension investments, funding strategies and long-term retirement outcomes. It reinforces something that many financial planners have been discussing with clients for several years: our investments don't exist in isolation from the world around us.
More Than Just Numbers
When I first meet a new client, our conversations go far beyond pensions, ISAs and investment performance.
One of the most valuable parts of the financial planning process is getting to know you. We take time to understand your goals, your priorities and what's important to you personally.
As part of this, clients complete several questionnaires, including one that explores their views on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing.
There isn't a right or wrong answer.
Some people feel very strongly that their investments should align with their environmental or social values. Others are more focused on different priorities. My role isn't to tell clients what they should think; it's to understand what matters to them so I can provide advice that's appropriate for their circumstances.
Does Your Money Match Your Lifestyle?
I often use a simple example.
Imagine you've invested thousands of pounds installing solar panels on your home.
You've changed to an electric vehicle.
You recycle, reduce waste and actively try to lower your carbon footprint.
Then imagine discovering that your pension investments don't reflect any of those choices.
In reality, investing is rarely as black and white as that. Diversified portfolios invest across many companies, sectors and regions, and ESG investing isn't simply about avoiding fossil fuels. It's about considering how environmental, social and governance factors sit alongside financial objectives and long-term investment decisions.
The important question is whether your investments are consistent with what matters to you.
Why This Conversation Matters
Climate change isn't just an environmental issue. Increasingly, it's becoming an investment issue too.
The Pensions in a Warming World report highlights that climate change has implications for investment returns, pension schemes and retirement security, making it something the financial services industry cannot afford to ignore.
As advisers, we have an important role to play in helping clients understand not only where their money is invested, but why
.
Financial planning has always been about preparing for the future.
Today, that future includes understanding how global challenges such as climate change may influence both our investments and our retirement.
The Conversation Starts With You
Whether ESG investing is an important factor for you or not, it's a conversation worth having.
Good financial planning isn't about following the latest trend. It's about ensuring your financial decisions reflect your personal goals, your attitude to risk and, where appropriate, your values.
If you've never asked where your pension is invested, perhaps now is the time.
Because your money should work just as hard for your principles as it does for your future.
